Dirty plates are piling up and you’re out of clean glasses – it’s time to replace your old dishwasher for a sparkling new one. This project is not as difficult as it sounds and should only take a couple of hours, but may require some plumbing skills. Here are a few handy tips to help you install your new dishwasher.
1. Consider where you want your dishwasher to be located
This shouldn’t be too difficult for those replacing an old model if you are already happy with its location. However, for new installations, you will need to find the most suitable spot in your kitchen. Modern dishwashers only need a cold-water supply, waste, and an electrical feed. Fitting your dishwasher against an exterior wall is ideal as you can hide the waste pipe from view, and it’s also best to be stood on a flat floor.
2. Unpacking your dishwasher
Don’t forget to remove all the packaging and transport securing from your new dishwasher. Make sure you leave the racks and trays in their packaging until the dishwasher is fully installed. This will protect them from any damage. It is a good idea to keep the packaging in case there are any issues which require you to return the dishwasher to the manufacturer.
3. Installing your dishwasher
Step 1: Turn off the water supply at the mains before carrying out any work.
Step 2: Fit an isolation valve to the water feed pipe so your dishwasher can be removed without having to turn off your mains water supply.
Step 3: if required, fit the waste adapter to the waste pipe, and following the manufacturer’s instructions, connect the feed and waste pipes.
Step 4: Connect your machine to the electricity supply.
Step 5: Run a cycle through your machine to test your connections.
Step 6: Carefully manoeuvre your dishwasher into place.
4. Consider hiring a plumber
If the above sounds a bit daunting, you may feel the best option is to hire a plumber. Hiring a professional will save you a lot of time and you will have the confidence that everything will be fitted correctly. Then you can relax and enjoy the benefits of your new appliance.
